Amy Doherty - Seed to Supper

Becoming Self-sustainable

Another teacher at Seed to Supper is our garden tip specialist Amy. She and Rylee aim to educate the community for free. Amy told me that every now and then, she feels like it’s hopeless to educate people in this era of consumption. However, the community who come to her class to learn about sustainability and how to grow their own food is the reason she wants to keep fighting for success. I have been friends with Amy for a long time, and her passion to live purposefully is something she’s always had with her. Below is a message from Amy. Enjoy!

Amy Doherty

I have always loved gardening! My family moved a lot when I was growing up and I would always have to leave the gardens that I started behind. As I got older, I started container gardening so I could take my gardens with me! I love being able to provide that experience to folks that don't have a yard for traditional gardening.

I am so proud to be a part of the Master Gardener program! Anyone can access our services for free or very low cost and get science based solutions that are specific to our area.

What made you want to teach this program, and why is this program different?

I think that the Master Gardener programs are needed now more than ever before as an essential resource for food security in our communities. During the pandemic and the subsequent surge in gardening, a vast array of products became available to fill that interest. So many of these "garden kit" products are expensive and require a subscription that is beyond the average person's budget. We are happy to assist and get folks gardening with no purchase required!

What do you like about teaching this program?

I love being a Seed to Supper Garden Educator! We personalize each class to the needs of that group. I love being able to help gardeners at all levels of gardening abilities learn to garden locally. So many folks are adapting to gardening in a new area and need some practical guidelines for starting seeds and planting outdoors.

We all have different ability levels, time availability and personal challenges and the Seed to Supper classes are a great free resource that provide personalized information for folks that want to learn more about gardening.

The Master Gardener Program is such a great network of individuals providing wonderful support to the community and I am so proud to be a part of that!

Amy took MG course in 2012 and is an experienced and well-received Seed to Supper instructor, having taught 3 class series in the past. Amy has also worked as an educational assistant in public schools. She is an experienced gardener, including container gardening and adaptive gardening.
